We really could do with a newsletter system, my site in particular has 300 members that aren't doing anything! so to try and motivate them I would like to keep them updated with a newsletter, but how easy would it be to code a html newsletter sender..? I wish I had enough php knowledge to do it myself :( or even an integration with elggs member database (email addresses) and phplist (http://www.phplist.com/) so phplist is where we create the emails and it handles the processing but the email database comes from the elgg users database! PHPList is OS Software...

There is a plugin that was released not so long ago by the ColdTrick team called Digest. I think that is what you're looking for.
Yes. Digest plugin will server you well if you are in 1.7.
Other options are to look at outside sources. www.mailchimp.com would be a good start. They have a nice API that could work well with elgg so that newsletters designed on your site went through their system.
+1 for MailChimp...you get amazingly detailed reports to help improve your newsletters.
I'm on 1.8.1 :( Its gotta be easy to sync the elgg database of email address with phplist... hmmm
@Adam:
You got it ! -- PhpList has got an import feature ;-) from CSV.. Remember ? I owed you one. This will be it ;-P EMail me back if intersted.
Cheers;-O
Over next few hours I'll just be testing out phplist to make sure its what I need! although why don't you make a simple export to CSV plugin for use in your favorite email sender :) that way we all benefit :)
oki ;-O mailchimp has csv import also - so maybe a dbl hitter ? ;-P whn i is fully awake..
@D: mailchimp has csv import and a lot more. The thing that makes it sooooo useful (in my mind) is the unbelievably detailed statistics you can garner from a campaign that has been sent out.
Even done to the detail of how many times each link was clicked and who clicked them etc. A useful tool to have in your elgg arsenal.
@dJ
http://docs.phplist.com/ImportUsersInfo has notes on preparing the cvs data for phpList; have a browse...
I Might not need any help found this feature in phplist!
