love the MT Activity Tabs idea, but you've disabled comments in the plugin so it's hard to reach you with bugs. Strangely this works perfectly using 3 column riverdashboard in a 1.7 environment, but in 1.6.1 it doesn't. It causes all content other than the activity river to disappear from the page.
