VeePlay for Elgg 1.8

Provides a shell to play audio and video files with a single player.

by Rip
Last updated 262 days ago

Offers a single plugin solution for most popular audio and video files uploaded using the File plugin.

Detects filetypes and switches to HTML5 or Flash using the fallback capabilities of JW Player.

Uses a single instance of JW Player from Longtailvideo.com.

Backend admin settings:

  • URL encoding filename option
  • Set Share On or Off
  • Set autoplay/autostart on or off
  • Independent selection of six skins
  • Selection of Visualization or Equalizer effects for audio files
  • Selection of share option
  • Independent selection of player screen sizes.

Installation:

  • Unzip, upload veeplay to mod directory
  • Make sure the plugin File is installed and active
  • Make sure VeePlay is positioned after the plugin File
  • Activate, go to settings to modify options.

Notes:

You must disable other media players while using VeePlay.

Audio MP4 is played via the video module, thus there are no a/v effects.

Successfully tested:

  • VIDEO: .mp4/m4v, .webm, .flv, .mov
  • AUDIO: .mp4/m4a, .mp3

Using

  • Firefox v15.0 (Linux)
  • Google Chrome v21.0.1180.89
  • Chromium v18.0.1025.168 (Developer Build 134367 Linux)
  • Opera v12.02.1578 (Linux)

NB Tested on 1.8.3 only.

Release notes:

  • Simplified and changed fallback logic
  • Added URL encoding option in Admin backend. There were random issues with media not playing due to spaces in the media filename.
  • Added four new skins and relocated
  • Changed sharing link to "view". Was "download"
  • Added additional save buttons in Admin backend :)
  • Simplified and tidied code and added more comments :)
  • Fixed language error!

    Hi,

Even with this new version I am still having difficulty getting playback to work on iOS devices (iPhone / iPad).

    Here is a public example:

    http://odyssey.bendigochurchofchrist.com/file/view/53/newbunny

    I get the following error:

"The video could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported: http://odyssey.bendigochurchofchrist.com/file/download/53/bunny.mp4"

Note that this is different to the error that I got with the pervious version. The previous error didn't include the last part of the filename (eg bunny.mp4).

Has anyone had any success using this plugin to play videos on an iOS device?

    Thanks

@stoz. Yes, you're right. Although .mp3 seems to work fine. I have discovered what's causing this, let me look into it to see if I can fix it.

    Cheers!

Any luck with iOS video playback yet Rip?

You said that you discovered what was causing the error, could you let me know what you think the problem is so that I could have a look into it too?

    Thanks,

    Stos

    Hi Roger,

I've made some minor tweaks to this to make it a bit more extensible - basically some optional integration with embed_extender so that uploaded audio/video can be embedded elsewhere within the site.

You don't have a repository listed so I don't know where I can push changes for review.  I've got it on github here: https://github.com/beck24/veeplay

Please check it out, I think it's worthwhile functionality.

@Matt Thanks Matt. Sorry, I've had some personal issues to attend to, so haven't been around for a while.

@stoz IOS won't accept a virtual video link. At least thats is how it is manifesting it with me.

    Hi

@matt it just works for audio files as mp3 but mp4. I've tested both veeplay from github or plugins page. What could I check in order to make it work?

    Thanks in advance!

@Rip: What are you doing to improve on this wonderful plugin. It should be able to have a separate page to display all site videos.Ability to play other video formats will do good.

    I tested mp3 on Firefox 18.0.1 + Safari 6.0.2 (Mac OS 10.8.2) - doesn't work.

    - all media plugins disabled

    - File plugin above veeplayer plugin

I really need this functionality on one of my Elggs. I hope the work continues. This could be awesome.
