I'm looking for some opinions and perhaps testing experiences on Elgg v1.8 ? We're considering going live with Elgg.1.8 for some of our elgg-sites.. The tests I've done myself (on XAMPP) seems to show v1.8 as being rather cool stuff. I will be loading some of out newer live elgg-sites with v1.8 sometime soon. I wonder if the Elgg Team have some soon in the future date to certify v1.8 for open release ??

most of the plugins I tried didn't work with the 1.8 ver
is it going to be solved? or it may need an adaptation process?
I'd like to start working on RTL for the default css of 1.8 right now. However haven't managed to work out how to build a theme plugin for 1.8 would appreciate some pointers.
Elgg 1.8 has not been released yet so you cannot judge plugin compatbility yet. There is still a lot of active development being done (and right now you cannot upgrade from 1.7 to 1.8 - that'll be fixed before 1.8 is released).
The Elgg API should be completely compatible between 1.7 and 1.8. If it is not, that's a bug and we;'ll fix it.
Elgg 1.8 has a new theme and a new css framework. This will require some updating of plugins. We're updating core plugins right now and writing documentation of what needs to be done.
@Susan - the themes are now broken into sections. Take a look at /views/default/css/screen.php and /views/default/css/elements/*.php. You should be able to build a theme by overriding the css elements views. More doucmentation to come on this. Keep an eye on the Elgg blog: http://blog.elgg.org/
I think this is one of the blogged topics - http://community.elgg.org/pg/groups/559729/elgg-news-blog-discussion/ -- that I've read up on..
@susan - I did play around hunting and pecking at the views involved to the 1.8 theme. Different yes, but the style seems quite neat. Since the originally stated aim for 1.8 was UI diections - I do expect and believe that eventually theming will become easier to deal with - perhaps a little getting used to in the beginning ;)
@Cash @Dhrup thanks, I'll have a play around with this over the weekend. It would be nice to be able to have an RTL default theme ready for when 1.8 is launched.
Small theming cosmetic issue ;-)
I wanna play around enuff to find the global structure of the new theming files -
then can weally play with mebbe my new 1.8 theme (theme name is "secret")
I will publish my xref here ;-P
